Badges, Trophies, and Achievements: Recognition and Accreditation for Informal and Interest-Driven Learning

Call for Applications: Badges, Trophies, and Achievements: Recognition and Accreditation for Informal and Interest-Driven Learning

Research: assessment, badging
Grants: Research Grant, Doctoral Student Grants, Student Prize, Faculty Prize
Deadline: Apply by *January 6, 2012* (application instructions:
http://www.dmlcompetition.net/Competition/4/research-apply.php)

Online networks, digital resources, and gaming environments provide rich opportunities for learning that is demand-driven and learner-centered. More and more people are turning to networked knowledge communities, online tutorials, and other digital resources for wide ranging learning needs. While learning is migrating to these more informal and non-institutionalized kinds of contexts, we still have little research that examines how people assess, recognize, and display the learning that happens in these settings.
 - What are the emerging techniques and practices for managing reputation and recognizing learning?
 - What are the broad historical and structural understandings of how accreditation operates in our changing social and cultural environment?
 - What systems exist for recognizing learning outside of formal degree and training programs?
 - How do credentials and other displays of achievement operate in the digital and networked world?
 - What kinds of skills and experiences have not been well captured by existing credentialing and recognition systems?
 - How is the landscape of credentialing changing (or not) with the shift to digital and networked society?

We seek empirical and theoretical research focusing on these questions. Studies should focus on areas such as:

 - Ranking, badging, and achievement systems in games, clubs, competitions, and other forms of interest-driven activities.
 - Accreditation and certificates outside of formal degree programs, including areas such as work skills training, language, writing, and critical thinking capabilities, arts, crafts, and other trades.
 - The role of credentials, badges, and other recognitions of achievement in career and reputation development.
 - Empirical, theoretical, and critical studies of how companies, groups, institutions, and individuals produce, utilize, and exploit various credentialing and reputation systems.

RESEARCH GRANT (1)
Research funds to support the gathering and writing up of findings on novel and effective ways of assessing learning practices, especially learning facilitated by digital media. We are especially interested in work considering the role and effectiveness of badges and badging systems as instruments of assessment though competitive proposals will not be limited to this narrower focus.

Awarded funds may be used for salary replacement, for travel in support of data collection, for modest graduate research assistance in support of the project (no more than one-third of final budget), or for modest  technological support for the project. The grantee will also be responsible for organizing a workshop or a working group on the topic. In addition to the faculty support funding of the award ($60,000) there would be a budget of $20,000 available to support the workshop or working group. These funds may be used to support travel, accommodation and food expenses for workshop or working group participants but not for graduate student stipends or fees.

The grantee is required to produce one publication, which could be a book, a MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Report, literature review, or white paper. Support for activities resulting in publication are to be included in the grant budget. Research award winners are expected to attend the Digital Media and Learning Symposium in San Francisco on February 29, 2012, followed by the Digital Media and Learning Conference on March 1-3, 2012 ( http://dml2012.dmlcentral.net/), as well as one of the Competition winners meetings, travel costs for which are to be included in the awarded budgets. Grantees are also required to set aside funds for the winners' event to be held in conjunction with the 2013 Digital Media and Learning Conference. Participation at the event is a requirement of the award.
 - Research funds: $60,000
 - Workshop/Working Group funding, in addition: $20,000
 - Application:

 - Proposal outline, including rationale and work plan, no more than  1000 words
 - Working group, or workshop outline, no more than 250 words
 - Budget and budget narrative for proposal
 - Budget and budget narrative for working group

DOCTORAL STUDENT GRANTS (2)
One year of funding to support dissertation research and write-up of findings on novel and effective ways of assessing learning practices, especially learning facilitated by digital media. We are especially interested in work considering the role and effectiveness of badges and badging systems as instruments of accreditation and assessment though competitive proposals will not be limited to this narrower focus.

Research award winners are expected to attend the Digital Media Symposium in San Francisco on February 29, 2012, followed by the Digital Media and Learning Conference on March 1-3, 2012 (http://dml2012.dmlcentral.net/), as well as one of the Competition winners meetings, travel costs for which are to be included in the proposed budgets. Awardees are also required to set aside funds for the winners' event to be held in conjunction with the 2013 Digital Media and Learning Conference (Dates TBD). Participation at the event is a requirement of the award.
 - Two awards of $20,000 each to cover tuition fees, research funds, living stipend.
 - Eligibility: By the time of award, applicant must have passed all Ph.D. eligibility requirements to advance to candidacy (ABD).
 - Application:
 - Proposal outline, up to 1000 words
 - A letter of support from the dissertation advisor, and list of 2  additional references.

I'm happy to announce a new, *completely free*, and authoritative overview of Social Computing, which is highly relevant to anyone designing interactive products. It's written by Tom Erickson - veteran researcher at IBM Research Labs - and includes 9 HD videos filmed in Copenhagen. It also includes commentaries by renowned designers/researchers like Elizabeth Churchill - manager of the Internet Experiences group at Yahoo! - and Andrea Forte from Drexel Uni.

These materials have taken 10 months to produce and involved 3 editors, 2 peer-reviewers, a camera crew of 2 people, 1 sound technician and 1 video editor. We've decided to continue to create world-class educational materials by elite professors and elite designers and give them to you for free. We would, however, be really grateful if you would share these materials, blog about them, or help us in other ways.

You can watch the videos and read the full overview here:

EGOS 2012 – Helsinki, Finland

EGOS 2012 – Helsinki, Finland
Subtheme "Self-reinforcing Processes in Organizations, Netzworks and Professions"
'Self-reinforcement dynamics' are defined as a process of positive feedback in which the increase of a particular variable leads to a further increase of this very variable. Examples of such intended and unintended processes, which bring about an action pattern which eventually gets deeply embedded in (inter-) organizational or professional practice, are self-justification, increasing returns, positive and negative network externalities, and adjusting expectations. The sub-theme particularly invites contributions that focus on one or more specific issues (see web page below), including for instance "Organizational learning and self-reinforcing dynamics". The sub-theme intends to foster an exchange of theoretical ideas and empirical research results across various substantive issues and theoretical traditions that are important for better understanding self-reinforcing dynamics. The due date for your initial paper proposals is January 16, 2012. If accepted, the due date for your full paper is May 31, 2012.  You can find more info about EGOS 2012 and our sub-theme at: http://www.egos2012.net/2011/06/sub-theme-20-self-reinforcing-processes-in-organizations-networks-and-professions/  Should you have questions or require additional information, please contact Prof. Dr. Jörg Sydowjoerg.sydow@fu-berlin.de

Workshop on hybridity and organisation in Turku, Finland

HYBRID ORGANIZATION WORKSHOP
Date: November 2-3, 2011
Location: Turku, Finland
Speakers and commentators:
Professor Celia Lury (Goldsmiths, University of London), Professor Eva Hemmungs Wirtén (Uppsala University) & Dr. Adam Arvidsson (University of Milano)
Convenors:
Professor Saara Taalas (Linnaeus University & University of Turku), Professor Alf Rehn (Åbo Akademi University), Dr. Lotta Häkkinen (University of Turku) & Dr. Nina Kivinen (Åbo Akademi University)
Hybridity has emerged as something of a new favorite theme in a number of disciplines, from cultural studies, geography and sociology to philosophy. In organization theory, hybridity has yet to establish itself fully as a conceptual framework, possibly due to the fact that we're still highly attached to the notion of an organization - a well-defined institution with clear boundaries. At the same time, the interest in the concept has never been greater, as notions of co-production, mixed forms of governance, multiplicities of practices, new business logics and developing technologies are perpetually mixing and remixing the notion of organizations and organizing. All that is solid is remixed into... what?
Traditionally, hybrid organizations have been understood through the conceptual lens of mixed public and private forms. However, this understanding has recently been challenged, particularly as new forms of exchange, collaboration and technological mediation has made evermore complex forms of productive organizational structures possible, prompting a call for understanding such new forms of hybrid organizing. A key, although not necessarily sole instantiation of this has been the new types of organization on the internet that combine peer community efforts, missions for common good and commercial scalability (Lessig 2008). At the heart of such hybrid organization lays the idea of co-production, but one where collaboration is not necessarily unproblematic. Hybrids build on many governing logics that can be contradictory, pervasive, collaborative, but permanently defy control by any one named actor.
It is here, in this complex nexus of not-quite-defined new forms of collaborative and mixed working that our workshop finds it impetus. The challenge, now, in a world of fan production, app-communities, mash-ups and brands in permanent flux, is to recast issues such as materiality, embodiment and borders - to reinterpret what are basic logics for organization. Where we might earlier have been able to "spot the organization" by its institutional forms, how are we to understand the notion of organization theory when the outside can become more central than the inside, and when not belonging might be the most potent productive force of all?
The purpose of the workshop is thus to link research on hybrid organizing, from a variety of disciplines, and encourage further collaboration with aspirations to produce an edited volume on hybrid organization during 2012. Attendance to the workshop is free but the number of participants is limited.
As part of this, we hereby cordially invite short papers (max 3000 words) on your ongoing research on issues connected to hybridity and organization, work that for example might address themes such as:
 - materiality, site, space and boundaries in hybrid organization
 - value, work and circulation in hybrid economies
 - management, power and control in hybrid organization
 - consumption, branding and appropriation in hybrid organization
 - hybrids as transformers of economic practice
Preliminary schedule: The workshop will run from around 9am on Wednesday November 2 and end at noon on the following day, Thursday November 3, 2011.
The deadline for short papers is September 15, 2011. Please send your paper to nina.kivinen@abo.fi
This workshop is a part of the research project Hybrid Organization: Media Brands as Sites of Co-Production financed by the Academy of Finland, and is arranged in co-operation with the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The workshop is part of the Hybrid Economy research initiative at the Finland Futures Research Centre at the University of Turku.
